10.   In Dinh’s perspective he felt ashamed and the sudden sadness that his thumb transplant did not go well or as he hoped. He was disappointed in himself for having too much hope and disappointed of the surgery. As a result, Dinh want to move forward in his life and not look back; hence, the narrator is now part of his past that he does not want to remember. This is why he did not meet or bother to drive the narrator to the airport.

He is not a man of God nor is he a believer. Despite his disbeliefs, he is great on his words; still he has passion, love, and commitment to the one that he adores, Roselily. Although, he is not a man of God, he is a man of his words. He moves forward in life and does not believe in looking back. Once his mind is set, he is set in his ways. He will take great care of her and build his future with her.

Thesis #1

Chopin introduces the outlining of marriage and how a wife can feel obligated to the needs of her husband. When Mrs. Mallard reached her climax of realization she felt, “Free! Body and soul free!” The confinement of her thoughts lead her to realize her freedom. This is when Louise confidently felt as if she was the “goddess of Victory.” Women today still struggles with marriage, they still feel obligated, and/or feel the accomplishment of “Victory”.

Initial Personal Reaction:

Initially my reaction was love at first sight and joy for her. How likely do people meet and feel the awesome connection that she did to have married so soon. My thought was that they met; things clicked and passionate feelings overwhelmed the two.  Typically, with everyone, there is the honeymoon stage and that—sometimes generates an overwhelming feeling; hence, love at first sight. Consequently, with some individuals, like her, it leads to marriage. When I continued with the reading, my feeling started to change. I thought wow, what have she got herself into. Suddenly I felt a sense of sympathy and uncertainty of the marriage.

Literary Element/Thematic Analysis:

The elements and thematic analysis would by the symbolic and visual imagery of the hand. The hand symbolizes the ugly truth. Ultimately, the truth of realizing how little she knew him was essentially hideous. The thought of the long-term outcome of this marriage is dreadful. Most compelling evidence is “the light, flowing out from under the edge of a parasol of bluish crystal, build up against the hand and made every contour of the skin apparent, exaggerating the powerful knuckles and the veins engorged by the pressure on the arm.” This indicates her wake up call, her expelling realization of the marriage, contingent rationalization towards the marriage, and the focus of this long journey in marriage has overwhelmed her and put this huge pressure on her. With this in mind, the hand will still be there, this marriage is still there, she will have to overlook and move forward by not turning back and that is why she kissed the hand.

SSRJ #1 Hemingway

Initial Personal Reaction: Hemingway Soldier’s Homes - essentially, focuses in Harold’s (Krebs) lost of self-identity. I felt deeply sadden for him. Moreover, I felt as if I was with him, completely lost, detached from society, from reality, misunderstood, unappreciated, and people’s perception of the world. Simply, because he was a soldier and coming back to reality was a shocker for him. For the reason that, many people did not seem to appreciate nor care for the truth of the story, but were only fascinated with the lies he told. The irony of him ranting on about how he likes them (girls) but does not need to be with them, interest me. Furthermore, it demonstrates a great detail of confusion, lack of ownership to even his own thoughts, and the inability to show confidence in his own thoughts all portray, a lost soldier. Consequently, after reading this short story, I recall a time when I felt helpless to one of my family member, as a result, I started to feel lost and confused. In essence, I can relate to the sense of feeling lost and confusion.

Literary Element/Thematic Analysis: Granted, Harold (Krebs) is the protagonist of the short story. The tone of the story seemed sympathetic which draws the audiences attention, like myself, into the story. The part of this imagery “late summer, he was sleeping late in bed,” and spending “the hottest hours of the day in the cool dark of the pool room” all signifies laziness and unwilling to change. He liked the dark pool room. Moreover, dark room illustrates the meaning of waiting, waiting for something to happen. I interpret that he is waiting for something to happen, but he is lazy, and at the end of the short story girls are not worth the “trouble.” In other words, he wants the girl, but doesn’t want to work for it, and believes that girls are not worth the trouble.
